How to get more Google reviews (without breaking Google's rules)
Quick answer
Ask every customer, soon after the job, with a direct link to your Google review form. Send one short reminder a few days later. Never offer rewards and never ask only happy customers.
1. Ask every customer, every time
Most happy customers never leave a review because nobody asked. The single biggest change is making the ask a routine step after each finished job, not something you remember on good days.
2. Ask at the right moment
Ask while the experience is fresh: the same day, or once the customer can see the result. For a repair that's right after it's done. For a salon, a few hours after the visit.
3. Send your direct review link
Don't make people search for your business. Send the link that opens your Google review form directly. Our guide on finding your Google review link shows how to get it.
4. Keep the message short and personal
Use the customer's first name, mention the job, and sign it with a real person's name. Two sentences is enough.
- Hi James, thanks for having us out today.
- If you have a minute, an honest Google review would really help our small team.
- — Mike
5. Follow up once, politely
One reminder a few days later often doubles the response. Stop as soon as they click, and always include an easy way to opt out.
6. Stay within Google's rules
- Don't offer discounts, gifts or entries for reviews.
- Don't ask only the customers you think are happy (review gating).
- Don't write reviews for yourself or ask staff to.
- Don't ask customers to change or remove a review in exchange for anything.
7. Reply to every review
Replies show future customers that you listen. Thank people for good reviews and answer critical ones calmly with a way to make it right.
